Chepelare is a sizable town in the Rhodopi Mountains (population 6000, elevation 1150m). About a 1 hour drive from the major city of Plovdiv (subject to the weather, of course), it is a busy ski resort, and it claims 270 days of sunshine per year (more than any other town in Bulgaria).
Rejuvenation
Like most of Bulgaria, Chepelare reflects recent history, with traditional Rhodopi style houses sitting alongside buildings from the Soviet era - all nestling in some of the most beautiful countryside. We are proud to be part of the rejuvenation of this town - a process that will continue for many years. Work has just started on transforming the town centre with a €3.5M development to include an amphitheatre.
Compared to its larger neigbour Pamporovo, 10km away, Chepelare is a relatively modest in size but has the facilities you need for a thrououghly enjoyable stay. The infrastructure is rapidly being improved, including new lifts and pistes; the planned linking of these two resorts will create a wonderful skiing area. For now, don't expect Verbier or Val d'Isere - but do expect something a little unusual at a very reasonable price - and great local food and drink.
Facilities
You will find all the facilities you would expect in any large town. You will of course find shops and cafes - but above all, you will find restaurants serving wonderful food and drink. You can pay on a daily basis to use the swimming pool, sauna and gym at a local hotel - but starting winter 2009/2010 the St George Hotel has its own sauna, gym and spa facilities.
Out of Season
The wonderful thing about Chepelare is that although it is an excellent ski resort, it is also in the midst of fabulous countryside, which makes for a very enjoyable summer holiday.
